Somalia: Planned Arrival of Warlord Aideed in Baidoa City Raises High Tension

12 April 2001

press release

Kismayo City — Bay Centre for Conflict Prevention (BCCP) is deeply concerned by reports on the planned arrival of warlord Hussein Aideed in Baidoa City of southern Somalia.

Warlord Aideed is one of the Somali brutal warlords who was sharply involved in committing grave war crimes, atrocities, brutal campaign of repression, ethnic cleansing against Rahawein people in Baidoa City and its surrounding area of southern Somalia, and in driving those tribes from their homes.

Serious doubt would be cast on the fairness and on the commitment of Rahawein leadership in fighting against past evil actions of Somali warlords in southern Somalia if a warlord who has committed such evil actions against the southern people and humanity is then welcomed in the region.

Warlord Aideed's previous arrival in the Puntland State of Somalia last year have already raised mistrust in and serious doubt about the Puntland leadership's commitment to protecting its people against another evil actions of warlords. Majority of people in the Puntland State of Somalia have directly or indirectly experienced brutal campaigns of repression by warlord Aideed in southern Somalia. Such ugly experience has prompted the Puntland people to establish autonomous region called 'Puntland State of Somalia' three years ago.

The BCCP warns that any arrival of warlord Aideed in Baidoa City of Somalia will only damage the unity of its people there and will not help bring a better life for Rahawein people.

Finally, we call on the leadership of Rahawein people to halt the planned arrival of warlord Aideed in Baidoa city and to foster calm and peace in their region and to avoid any resort to violence.

The Centre's officials are closely continuing to monitor the planned arrival of warlord Aideed and its possible impact on stability of Baidoa City.
