Uganda: PPU Men Guard Lake Shores in Rakai

Kampala — At least ten marine police personnel from the President Protection Unit (PPU) have been deployed on the shores of Lake Victoria in Rakai district to fight thugs who have been terrorising fishermen.

The deployment follows an attack on fishermen last weekend by armed men who stole about ten boat engines and injured several people.

The men armed with SMG guns and machetes disappeared towards the Tanzania.

They attacked a second time but fishermen spotted them in advance and escaped to the main land.

Alphonse Mbuga, the district Police Commander, told The New Vision that the Police had beefed up security at Kasensero landing site.

He said residents of Kasensero contributed funds for fuel and hired rooms at the site for the PPU personnel.

"We have assured people that the marines will stay in the area until further notice so that they do not experience more attacks," Mbuga said.

He said business was back to normal.
