Ethiopia: Alemaya University Students Boycott Classes

Addis Ababa — Alemaya University students had allegedly boycotted classes last Friday after authorities refused to allow them stage a rally in the city of Harar, it was learnt.

In a meeting they held last Thursday, Alemaya University students had reportedly condemned police brutality on Addis Ababa University (AAU) students and expressed their support to the AAU students' demands.

In their attempts to show solidarity with AAU students, Alemaya students requested authorities to stage a rally in Harar city.

However, not only did the authorities decline their request but also issued an ultimatum to resume classes by Friday, 11:00 a.m.

The conflict between students and authorities escalated to the point where students were temporarily barred from leaving campus. Later on students were reportedly allowed to leave but without their personal effects.

Several Alemaya Agricultural University students arrived in Addis yesterday.

In a similar development, Mekelle University students have also reportedly quit classes and clashed with police.
