Somalia: President Willing to Meet Faction Leaders

8 June 2001

The president of the Transitional National Government (TNG), Abdiqassim Salad Hassan, said on Wednesday that he was ready to meet faction leaders opposed to the TNG, a senior official told IRIN. Denying reports that he was reluctant to meet the faction leaders, the president told a women's group that he was " ready to meet them anytime, anywhere", according to Abdirahman Dinari, the TNG's director of information. The president told his audience that he was exploring all avenues towards advancing the reconciliation process, Dinari said. He called on the women to play a greater part in the efforts to establish security in the country, "since it is their sons, brothers, and husbands" who were responsible for most of the difficulties facing the country.

Meanwhile, members of the TNG cabinet and parliament had started to fan out into the regions, in preparation for the establishment of regional administrations, Dinari told IRIN. The first group of MPs and ministers visited the Lower Shabelle Region in southern Somalia on Wednesday. The delegation was led by the labour and sports minister who originates from the region. Other delegations will be going to their respective regions in the next few days, according to Dinari.
