The TNA has ended its debate of a motion seeking authority to bring in foreign troops to disarm faction militias in Somalia, an official told IRIN. "The sponsors of the motion failed to muster sufficient votes to pass it." The motion had needed only a simple majority to pass. The TNG, which was opposed to the motion, had lobbied against it, said the official. The debate had attracted strong criticism from the opposition, including Mogadishu-based faction leader Hussein Muhammad Aydid. Aydid said that if foreign troops were invited to help impose order, they would be "fought brutally", Agence-France Presse (AFP) said.
