Egypt: Students Protest

Lagos — Nearly 4,000 Egyptian university students on Wednesday protested an expected US military strike on Afghanistan and burned an Israeli flag to denounce Israel's crackdown on the Palestinian uprising.

The students at Cairo University condemned the US military buildup aimed at forcing the Taliban authorities in Kabul to hand over Osama bin Laden, the top US suspect in the September 11 attacks in the United States.

"Whatever our differences with the Taliban, we say no to the Americans," chanted the students, who represented different political groups, including Islamists.

During the protest which was confined to the campus, the students also burned the Israeli flag and voiced support for "the struggle of the Palestinian people against the barbaric Israeli occupation."

Scores of anti-riot police watched the event without intervening.
