Albert Akpor

9 October 2001

Inspector-General of police Mr. Musliu Smith yesterday summoned all zonal commanders and commissioners of police across the country to a meeting at the force headquarters, Abuja.

Sources said the meeting is aimed at fashioning out ways of ensuring that embassies are protected following America and British raid of Afghanistan.

The IGP in another vein has expressed dismay over the organisation of political rallies and meetings in some states by party officials, politicians and supporters without permission and flagrant violation of the public order act.

Informed police sources in Lagos said the meeting which is expected to commence today is scheduled to run through Wednesday during which adequate security provisions for all foreign embassies in the country would be discussed.

Sources further said apart from discussing enhanced security around various embassies, the IGP is also expected to speak on the need for harmonization of working relationship between commissioners of police and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs).
