Kenya: Fleeing Man Killed By Crocodiles

20 October 2001

A herdsman fleeing from the para-military General Service Unit currently on an extensive security operation in Tana River District was mauled by crocodiles when he dived into Tana River.

Dima Molu Dulo, 30, was killed on Wednesday by the reptiles as he sought refugee in the water.

The GSU men had raided Gubani village in search of illegally held arms used to cause terror in the district.

More than 19 people were allegedly tortured and four women reportedly raped in turns during the operation.

Yesterday, at Garsen DO's office, civic leaders Abakano Abadula of Konemansa and Adam Gurka of Galili paraded the victims of police torture to the new DC, Mr James Waweru "for him to see the inhumanity caused by the policemen."

The two civic leaders appealed to the Government to stop the operation if peace among the warring Pokomo and Orma communities was to be restored.

At Odole and Mwanja villages, another group of GSU men allegedly broke into a shop belonging to a women's group and looted property valued at Sh20,000.

The women complained that the policemen had chased away the shopkeepers so they could loot the shops.

Three elders were rushed to Malindi hospital in serious condition after they suffered body wounds allegedly inflicted by the policemen.
