It was too much to hope that post-September 11 the world would become a more level-headed place. Years of post-Cold War fat living allowed the world to entertain idleness like the Kyoto Treaty on global warming and, now that the leaner years are ahead, we should dispense with such nonsense.
Bad news. The sensibility cult still flourishes. Like Jane Austen's Marianne, the academic-socialist enterprise that delivered Kyoto is ruled by feelings rather than fact. There was good reason to dislike Marianne and enjoy the misfortunes of her emotionalism. The problem is that she was never content to keep tribulation to herself. Kyoto is all about creating and spreading misery.
