Banjul — The environment has become of vital focus to all and sundry for a long time now. Although man has been behind its very degradation, human beings have also in one way or the other being influenced by the changes to our environment. The Independent is therefore launching a new column dedicated to the environment.

A number of decades back The Gambia has been bearing the brunt of erosion on its coastline. For a small resource-less country, which largely depends on tourism, this phenomenon is an enormous disaster to the reputation of the country as a haven of wildlife. Not only hotels, but also the main and only road, the water and power supply of the capital Banjul are constantly under threat. The sea has devoured 60 percent of the biggest Muslims cemetery.
