Nigeria: Demolition of Churches Okonkwo Predicts Bloodbath

Fidelis Njoku

13 December 2001

Lagos — Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) and President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Mike Okonkwo, has condemned the recent demolition of Victory Christian Centre, located in Abule Oshun by the Lagos State Task Force on the Environment, describing the action as anti-Christ and one capable of resulting in bloodbath of a great magnitude if not cheeked.

Bishop Okonkwo, stated this yesterday at a press conference he addressed in Lagos in connection with the action of the Task Force against the Victory Church. He said no individual, group or government, no matter how powerful, had ever won a battle against the Church of God in the history of mankind.

He said any move from any quarters in the state or elsewhere against the body of Christ under any guise will fail and those behind such a move will live to regret it.

The Pentecostal leader, who was visibly angry while addressing journalists, warned that it would not be possible to chase Christians out of Lagos or suppress their activities.

He advised those who might have such an agenda to drop it as it can spark off violence which may eventually consume everybody. The religious leader further called on the authorities in the land to learn how to apply constitutional means in pursuing their goals instead of taking the laws into their hands by behaving in an uncivilised manner at the slightest excuse.
