Nigeria: Improve Police Funding for Efficiency - Rtd. AIG

Lagos — A retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Simeon O. Oduoye JP, has advised the government to improve the funding of the police for better performance.

In a chat with P.M.News, Oduoye said "the government does not need to appoint or employ the services of a public relations consultant before the image of the police could be improved".

The retired AIG and two-time state administrator said police bad image emanated from poor funding. "When you go to a police station to lodge a complaint, there are no stationery materials to write with, no chairs or table, so what kind of image do you expect?" he asked.

Continuing, he said, "worse still, the vehicles are bad, no weapon to tackle crime among other things, so the funding must be improved first".

Oduoye, who is presently aspiring to be governor of Osun State, said if the image of the police can be improved through funding, it will attract qualified people from the labour market.

Speaking on his governorship ambition, the retired AIG said " I have served outside my state during the military era, it is now time for me to serve my people with the experience I have gathered".

He said nothing works in Osun State for now. "The educational sector, the civil service, the roads are bad and many other things work in the state on the pages of newspapers, radio and television. With a better hand, things will improve", he stated.
