The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in collaboration with other stakeholders as well as Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) has developed a strategic document which spells out plan of action for each stakeholder in their bid to reduce accidents in the country by 5% by the year 2005.
The stakeholders are the Ministry of Road and Transport, Ghana Highway and Authority, Department of Urban Roads, Department of Feeder Roads and Motor Transport and Traffic Unit.
Others are Friends of Christ Relief Agency, Safe Journey Network and Global Road Safety Partnership Ghana.
In an interview with the Chronicle in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Noel Arcton-Tettey, the Information Officer of NRSC contended that the 5% target set would seem unrealistic to the general public considering the number of accidents that occur in the country.
He pointed out that the factors associated with road accidents are numerous and it is very difficult to find lasting solutions to them.
Mr Tettey added that every partner has been assigned with specific roles so as to avoid duplication of functions.
According to him, there has been a reduction in the accident cases recorded last year but bemoaned the severity of those occurred.
Statistics for last year indicate that from January to March, a total of 4326 vehicles were involved in accidents in which 303 lives were lost, while 2032 were injured.
Also April and June saw 5572 accidents with 245 deaths and 2221 injuries.
In addition, between July and September there were 4550 recorded accidents in which 402 people lost their lives and 2425 were injured.
Meanwhile, the 4th quarter figures were yet to be released.
In his short contribution, Inspector Yakubu of NRSC attributed accidents in the country to lack of strict enforcement of laws.
This he said, pave the way for road users to do whatever they like without any fear.
He therefore, suggested that some of the laws regarding road safety should be reviewed.
On bribery allegations levelled against the police in the country , Inspector Yakubu maintained that it is human nature.
'Something you have not done, you can be branded with it', he said.
