Goalkeeper Boukar Alioum saved two penalties to give Cameroon a 3-2 win in the shootout and ensure they became the first country in 27 years to retain the trophy.

Cameroon, who did not concede a goal in all their six matches in the tournament, dominated yesterday against a Senegal team making their first appearance in the final.

They hit the bar, had a Samuel Eto'o goal harshly disallowed and saw Pius Ndiefi miss the best of a series of good chances when he headed wide in front of an open goal.

Senegal had the early advantage in the shootout after their goalkeeper, Tony Sylva, saved Pierre Wome's opening kick. But Alioum's save from Amdy Faye and a bad miss by El Hadji Ousseynou Diouf saw the advantage swing in favour of the defending champions.

Captain Rigobert Song, who scored the winning kick when Cameroon beat Nigeria on penalties to win the trophy two years ago, could have done it again with his country's final kick but also had his shot saved by Sylva.

However, Alioum then saved from Senegal captain, Aliou Cisse, to guarantee a return to the winners' podium for the Indomitable Lions.(ACONS)
