South Africa: Vonk Bounces Back After African Woe

11 February 2002

South Africa goalkeeper Hans Vonk was delighted to put the disappointment of elimination from the African Nations Cup behind him as his club Heerenveen beat AZ Alkmaar 2-0 on Saturday.

The victory, sealed by goals from Marcus Allback and Stefan Selakovic, kept Heerenveen's slim hopes of winning the Dutch Premier League title alive and Vonk was happy to slot back into a winning team.

"I was informed in Mali that we had been playing well lately and that was proven today," he said.

"I believe that we did well tonight. We finished our chances and then it looks like an easy win."

Following a week that saw PSV Eindhoven and Utrecht both lose, he added: "It's nice to see that a few of our rivals for the top spots dropped points last Wednesday and I hope that it happens again this weekend.

"If you then grab a win yourself you're making good headway."(ACONS)
