BLASPHEMY, hypocrisy and cheap politicking was the order of the day at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) that other day. Thousands of prayer-anticipating Christians poured into the HICC for what was hoped to be a historic Prayer Day for our troubled Zimbabwe.
Little did these unsuspecting Christians know that they were about to get a five-hour-long political orientation seminar from Zanu PF chiefs. I for one, got the shock of my life when I entered the conference hall.
My eyes were greeted by hundreds of the Madzibaba Nzira's Apostolic sect members holding and lifting placards inscribed with Zanu PF political messages and portraits of President Mugabe.
They sung a chimurenga song entitled Nyika Ino Maiwee as they were toyi-toying much to the horror and annoyance of thousands of stunned observers who felt cheated by their church leaders.
As if that was not enough, church leaders who included Reverend Musindo, Bishop Nolbert Kunonga and Madzibaba Nzira took turns to hail Mugabe and his regime.
They did not hesitate to use the name of God in their vain bid to show their followers that Mugabe was the Messiah for Zimbabwe. In a hypocritical manner, church leaders omitted the much-needed restoration of the rule of law, peace and order in the country, instead preferring to ask God to grant us "sovereignty", a request which God granted Zimbabwe 21 years ago.
The pioneer of the whole confusion was Reverend Musindo who rose up to deliver an ungodly sermon. Without opening the Bible for scriptural reference, the emotionally charged Reverend burst out empty statements which directionlessly criticised the youths in Zimbabwe, the independent Press, Western countries and the opposition political parties in the country.
Musindo shocked everyone in the auditorium when he said to Mugabe and I quote: "Cde Mugabe, you have shown a lot of mercy to us by redistributing land. Actually you have been more merciful than God Himself!"
No matter how excited a person can become, one cannot afford to commit spiritual suicide by equating God with man. Meanwhile, MadzibabaNzira, true to character, claimed to have received a prophecy from God.
In his daydream, Nzira claimed that God told him that Mugabe was a divinely appointed King of Zimbabwe and no man should dare challenge his office.
People in the hall were stunned when Nzira added that God told him that the President should shelve the presidential election until everyone was fully resettled on the fast-tracked pieces of land.
The President himself also got his turn to preach the gospel of sovereignty. Mugabe thundered that his government would continue with the random grabbing of land with or without sanctions.
I noticed that the crowd was dead silent as Mugabe narrated his tale, although a small group of his fanatics led by Reverend Musindo, frantically failed to lead people into constant cheering and clapping.
However, the only attraction of the day was the country's leading gospel singer, Charles Charamba, who was received by a thunderous applause much to the embarrassment of Mugabe whose reception by the crowd was that of an ordinary figure.
Charamba must be commended for reserving his political opinions and keeping focused on singing to the Lord Jesus Christ. His neutral political stance seemed to have relieved people who, in turn, screamed with joy while dancing and waving the MDC's open palm symbol.
Let me finish by warning our church leaders to refrain from unholy alliances because of the love of money. I interpret the absence of Prophet Andrew Wutawunashe of the Family of God and Apostle Ezekiel Guti of Zaoga FIF as a clear boycott.
I, therefore, salute them for refusing to be used in blaspheming the name of our God for political gain. To my own church leader, Reverend Manyika of the AFM in Zimbabwe, I humbly advise you to realise that most of your followers like myself do not subscribe to Zanu PF principles, values, goals and objectives and as such, your continued appearance at Zanu PF- organised meetings will undermine the integrity and future of your presidency while bringing the name of our church into serious disrepute.
So may the loving God add more wisdom to you so that you can discern and avoid unequal yoking in future.
