Pretoria — The Johannesburg World Summit Company (JOWSCO) has called on South Africans to volunteer their skills and services during the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 (WSSD) in Johannesburg later this year.

JOWSCO says volunteers' participation would go a long way towards ensuring that the conference is a success.

In a statement released today, JOWSCO said it required volunteers including professionals, students, skilled individuals and civil servants.

The corporate sector is also encouraged to second people with specific skills as their contribution to the ideals of sustainable development.

'This is the Year of Volunteerism and the WSSD Volunteer programme will probably be the largest to date in South Africa. It is important that each one of us take the initiative and responsibility to showcase our best hospitality,' said chief executive officer (CEO) of JOWSCO, Moss Mashishi.

'Volunteers will undergo training that will have minimal impact on their every day lives.'

Encouraging potential volunteers, Mr Mashishi said 'the WSSD presents a once in a lifetime opportunity for South Africans to participate in this UN event and interact with people from all over the world.'

'Volunteering will also ensure the transfer of skills as participants will be trained and exposed to the processes of putting together a massive event of this scale.'

Meanwhile, the JOWSCO has announced that it has embarked on a roadshow to recruit professionals and students to ensure that the target of 5 000 volunteers is reached.
