Pretoria — Developments regarding the African Union (AU) and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad) will come under the spotlight at bilateral talks between Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aziz Pahad and his Ukranian counterpart Volodymir Yelchenko tomorrow.
Mr Yelchenko arrives in South Africa today for a two day working visit at the invitation of Mr Pahad.
The two deputy ministers will hold political consultations on bilateral and multilateral areas of cooperation, as well as issues of mutual global concern, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Mr Pahad will hear about internal developments in the Ukraine, including the forthcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of this month. Mr Yelchenko will also share the Ukraine's views on developments in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Agreements that currently exist between the two countries include a Memorandum of Understanding between the Foreign Affairs ministries, a Declaration of Intent between the ministries of Agriculture, a Protocol of Friendship and Cooperation between the cities of Pretoria and Kyiv and an MOU between the South African Council of Geosciences and the Ukranian State Committee on Geology and Utilisation of Mineral Resources.
A Programme of Cooperation (POC) in the field of science and technology is currently under consideration.
The aim is to establish cooperation in this field and is expected to include the exchange of scientists.
In order to provide momentum to the existing bilateral economic relations, Mr Yelchenko will hold talks with members of the South African Chamber of Business (SACOB) as well as the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut (AHI).
Also on the table is the conclusion of an Agreement of the Avoidance of Double Taxation to be signed in Kyiv in the near future.(ADF3)
