MINNA MINISTER of Water Resources, Mr. Muktar Shehu Shagari, has given December this year as deadline for the completion of the multi-million naira Kagara Dam in Niger State .
The minister, who visited the site during an inspection of projects under his ministry in Niger State, said the government would not in any form review the contract sum under any guise. Contract for the dam was awarded in 1979 for a whopping sum of N5 billion out of which about N3 billion has been paid by the previous military administrations. Shagari said his ministry has already released N700 million to the contractor handling the project since he took over, adding that the completion of the dam is the priority of the present administration. He assured that money will be released by installment to the contractor according to the pace of work and urged them to live up to the expectation of the Federal Government. The minister also visited the Tungar Kawo Dam and irrigation project in Wushishi town, where he told the farmers who clustered round him that the present administration was committed to agriculture and food security which he described as the main stay of the economy. He assured them that all their demands will be looked into immediately towards solving them with dispatch.
