Lagos — The Students Union president of Benue State University (BSU) Makurdi, Mr. Titus Yeke has called on the National Assembly to enact a law prescribing stringent punishment for students involved in cultism in tertiary institutions in the country.
Yeke spoke in the wake of recent events in the university in which students killed two members of a secret cult in revenge for an earlier murder of a student by cult members.
The students union leader called on his colleagues to denounce cultism and other unholy sects as well as expose any known cult member who is their friend or neighbour.
Yeke, who declared Thursday a lecture-free day for students, vowed they would wage an unrelenting battle against any known cult member in the institution.
The deputy vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Yakubu Ochefu had in an interview described what happened on campus on Monday as a clash between two cults secretly operating in the institution.
He named the cults as the Black Axe and the Vicking, adding that because they swear oaths of secrecy it has not been easy fishing them out.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) however reports that the police have stepped into the matter as confirmed by its public relations officer in the state, Mr. Emmanuel Adesina.
