South Africa: Errant MPs May Soon Pay a Price

Johannesburg — Misbehaving MPs could soon be hit hard and where it hurts in their wallets according to the latest version of the Powers and Immunities of Parliament Act which is being drafted by a special committee.

Recent attempts to sanction MPs, including Patricia de Lille of the Pan Africanist Congress and Justice Minister Penuell Maduna, have been unsuccessful as the existing law, dating from 1962, does not provide for the punishment of MPs found to be in contempt of Parliament.
