South Africa: Afropop Presents Benefit Concert - 'Let Freedom Sing!'

New York — Public radio's Afropop Worldwide presents Let freedom sing!, a benefit concert co-hosted, with a special guest appearance, by Bonnie Raitt, Monday April 29th at the Bottom Line in New York city, featuring top talent from South Africa and Zimbabwe - the Mahotella Queens, SA jazz legend Dorothy Masuku, and Thomas Mapfumo.

Let freedom sing! celebrates South Africa's freedom anniversary and supports community initiatives in Zimbabwe

Brooklyn, NY--4.11.02-- Never before and perhaps never again will this all-star cast of talent from southern Africa appear together on the same stage. On Monday April 29th the South African vocal trio the Mahotella Queens, South African jazz legend Dorothy Masuku (a contemporary of Miriam Makeba), and Thomas Mapfumo, the maestro of Zimbabwe roots rock music called chimurenga, will perform at the Bottom Line in New York City. The artists will perform their own repertoire and together for the first time.

The artists will also be inducted into the Afropop Hall of Fame during this benefit concert called Let Freedom Sing! Produced by Brooklyn-based non-profit media organization World Music Productions, the benefit aims to raise funds for its syndicated public radio series, Afropop Worldwide and its web site www.afropop.org. Additional beneficiaries include Voice of the People, the only private radio service in Zimbabwe, and a fund to assist families of musicians in Zimbabwe who have died of AIDS.

Bonnie Raitt co-hosts the evening along with Georges Collinet, host of public radio's Afropop Worldwide (heard on over 100 PRI stations in the U.S.) Ms. Raitt will make special guest appearances to close out both sets for Let Freedom Sing! on 4.29. She will be performing songs from her just released album "Silver Lining" (Capitol).

* 7 pm and 10 pm concerts at the Bottom Line, 15 W. 4th St.

* 7 pm - featuring The Mahotella Queens, Dorothy Masuku, and guest appearance by Bonnie Raitt

* 10 pm - featuring Thomas Mapfumo and guest appearance by Bonnie Raitt

Dorothy Masuku will also be performing a Freedom Day Concert on Saturday 4.27 3-6 pm (free) at PS 1 in Queens in a concert co-organized by CrossPathCulture.
