Africa: World Cup: Onigbinde Declares War

NIGERIA'S group F opponents in the 2002 World Cup finals which kick off tomorrow, are sure to have their hands full against the Super Eagles, if the words of Chief Coach Adegboye Onigbinde, are anything to go by. Nigeria will be battling for a second round ticket alongside former world champions Argentina, England, and Scandinavian campaigners Sweden, in what is generally regarded as the 'group of death'. But, a confident Onigbinde, Monday, in a chat with the BBC, dismissed all the hype about Argentina and England, declaring that the Eagles were good enough for the ultimate prize in world football.

"My target is to win the World Cup, and I strongly believe that Nigeria, like the other 31 contenders, have the means to achieve this. Big names don't play football. It's a team sport, and I'm happy that my boys are coming on strong. Team spirit is high, and despite the youthfulness of majority of the players, they have displayed a very positive attitude to excel at the World Cup," said the 64-year-old Modakeke, Osun State-born high chief.
