Kenya: Kipketer silences stars

International Sammy Kipketer beat a star-studded field to win the 10,000 metres race as the Armed Forces Athletics Championships opened at the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani yesterday.

Kipketer, who displayed form and endurance throughout the race, was timed at 28 minutes 16.2 seconds .

Paul Kosgei was placed second in 28:24.0. Veteran Tom Nyariki was third (28:38.4) after beating Patrick Ivuti in a vigorously fought last 50 minutes.

David Kiplak (3:44.5) and Robert Rono (3:46.6) booked a place in the 1,500m final after winning their heats. The women category saw Margaret Ngotho and Iness Chenonge winning their respective heats with Chenonge clocking 4:18.0 and Ngotho 4:23.3.
