Johannesburg — MINING and related issues will come under the spotlight when the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek) hosts a two-day event, to run parallel with the earth summit conference, on August 29 and 30.

The theme will be green technologies for the formal and informal mining sector.

Mintek falls under the minerals and energy department.

Conference organiser Jean Martins says the event will be supported by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the SA Chamber of Mines; the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Developmernt Centre, CSIR Miningtek and Eskom. It will consist of presentations, an exhibition, and site visits.

Topics to be discussed will include issues related to smallscale mining and its social and environmental impact on surrounding communities.

The application of envirofriendly technology to help smallscale miners beneficiate their products, as well as the demonstration of these technologies in an effort to alleviate poverty in rural communities, will come under the spotlight.

Issues relating to the formal mining sector will focus on the general environmental concerns relating to the mining and metallurgical industry.

Also up for discussion will be what the mining industry can do to solve environmental problems and to make mining efficient.

The event will be held at Mintek's 400-seater auditorium, foyer and conference rooms in Randburg.
