Ethiopia: Government Announces US $2.2 Billion Budget

The Ethiopian Council of Ministers has approved a US $2 billon budget for the year of 2003 - an increase of four percent over last year. The money will be used for salaries for all government employees and for massive investment in the country's crumbling infrastructure.

Projects to be financed include those for poverty reduction and capacity building across the country. More than half the total - some $1.3 billion - is allocated to the federal budget, the balance to be channelled to the regions towards boosting basic services like health and education.
