Uganda: UN to Discuss Northern Warfare

22 July 2002

REBEL atrocities in northern Uganda is one of the issues to be discussed by the United Nations Security Council this week, an official has said.

Noeleen Heyezer, the Executive Director of the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), told journalists in Kampala yesterday that women and children were the main victims in any conflict situation and that no development can take place without peace.

"We have already taken up this issue with the UN Security Council and managed to secure a resolution condemning the atrocities," Heyezer said.

She said the council would meet this week to discuss the issue of women, peace and development.

The UN resident co-ordinator in Uganda, Dr. Daouda Toure, said the situation in the north was worrying and any developments achieved were likely to be rolled back.

He said he was to meet the Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Brig. Moses Ali, on the possibility of ensuring that relief supplies reached the affected persons. Ends
