Zimbabwe: Presence of Zanu-PF Youths Scares Away Fans

THE presence of Zanu PF youths at the Mvura Naya Naya musical concert held at the Harare Gardens on Sunday drove away many fans who could have readily attended the show.

In fact, the Zanu PF youths, wearing their party regalia and bandanas, on Saturday drove two beasts through the city centre of Harare chanting slogans against Learnmore Jongwe, the MP for Kuwadzana. Jongwe is facing allegations of stabbing his wife, Rutendo, to death. The youths were among the organisers of the Mvura Naya Naya gig, who marched along Samora Machel Avenue, driving cattle to Nharira Hills in Norton, where a rain-making ceremony was scheduled to take place. The youths sang songs denouncing Jongwe allegedly for being inhuman, and calling for his death. Most music fans stayed away from the gig, apparently, for fear of violence and contagion from the acts of the thugs. Given their reputation for violence, it was going to be difficult for music fans to put on brave faces and attend the Mvura Naya Naya concert, in the presence of the ruling party youths.
