Nigeria: Twenty Arrested Over Cult Clash

Abeokuta — No fewer than 20 suspected cultists have been detained at the Ogun State Police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta over their alleged involvement in the weekend cult clash which led to the killing of three other suspected cult members.

THISDAY gathered that the arrested suspects were said to have been involved in the killing of other members at Onikolobo and Sapon areas of Abeokuta on Friday night.

Informed sources explained that a violent clash had broken out between members of rival Eiye and Buckaneer confraternities on Thursday and spelled over to Friday which later resulted in the killing of the three members.

Further investigation revealed that the clash saw the use of dangerous weapons with several persons receiving serious matchet cuts.

While confirming the arrest and the killings of suspected cultists in the clash, the command spokesman, Kingstour Irozuru, said that the arrests were made outside the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic campus.

Irozuru said yesterday that though Ohucolobo and sapon areas of Abeokuta have remained calm, "our men are still on patrol to checkmate any backlash."

While featuring as a guest on a Television programme in Abeokuta, Rector of the Polytechnic, Alhaji Waheed Kadiri, said the institution was yet to ascertain the true identity of the slain student.

He dispelled the notion that the Polytechnic has assumed notoriety with incessant cult clashes, noting that the issue of cultism was a national problem not peculiar to MAPOLT, even as he assured of the resolve of the institution to nip the vice in the bud.
