Uganda Library Association (ULA) is working with the communities to develop a reading culture in the country.

ULA Chairman, Elisam Magara told a one-day seminar at Makerere University recently that the association has so far organised reading camps in Bushenyi, Jinja, Iganga, Lira, Mpigi, Kabale and Kampala.

"I believe that the culture of reading is one of the most important elements that have been absent in our education system. The education strategic investment plan addresses UPE among priority areas of focus in Uganda. This needs support and a combined effort to achieve government's noble objective," he said.

He said other sectors of the economy have incorporated training, reading and adult literacy in their agenda.

"But one wonders how these programmes are to be achieved without a motivated reading culture?" Magara said.

Over 40 librarians from all over the country attended the seminar.

UNESCO Secretary General Anastasia Nakkazi, who presided over the closing ceremony, said the reading culture issue must be addressed to improve literacy in Uganda.
