Many women in Nairobi did not take part in the voter registration exercise. The latest figures released by the Electoral Commission of Kenya show that the number of registered women voters in Nairobi is almost half that of men.

The total number of men registered as voters is 593,606 compared to 300,843 for women. In total the province has 894,471 registered voters.

This is different in rural areas, especially in Muslim dominated regions of Coast and North Eastern provinces where the number of women voters in certain constituencies is even higher compared to men. For example, Kinango Constituency in Kwale District has 21,351 female voters compared to 20,074 male voters .

In total, Kilifi District has 87,352 women voters compared to 74,880 men.

In North Eastern Province, the scenario is almost the same with more women having registered in Fafi, Ijara, and Mandera East constituencies. In the dry regions of Moyale, Kitui, Mwingi, Marsabit, and Isiolo districts of Eastern Province the number of women registered as voters is similar to that of men.

In Kitui South Constituency, there are 20,616 women voters compared to 18,605 male voters. In Mwingi North, the home of Kalonzo Musyoka, there are 26,675 women voters compared to 26,291 male voters.

Even in Baringo District, home to Kenya's longest serving politician President Moi, the number of women voters is 50,347 compared to 47,435 men.

The situation changes in agriculturally viable regions of Rift Valley, Central, Western, and parts of Nyanza provinces where male voters are higher.

In Nyandarua District for example, women voters total 80,508 compared to 92,580 men voters. In Nyeri, there are 146,794 women voters compared to 159,936 male voters. The is the same case in Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Maragwa, Kiambu, and Thika districts where the number of male voters is higher than that of the women.
