Uganda: Kayanja Says Dead Detainee Muhumuza a Robber

The Deputy Director of ISO Col. Elly Kayanja a man who allegedly died under his custody was a deadly robber.

Patrick Muhumuza's body was Aug.13 found dumped near his home in Ntungamo.

Security operatives under Operation Wembley that targets robbers picked Muhumuza, a businessman, on Aug. 6, according to his relatives.

They said he was transferred to Kampala where he died Aug. 12 while under Internal Security Organisation custody.

Kayanja said Muhumuza had for long been involved in highway robberies between Ntungamo and Kabale, and staged ambushes at Kampiringisa along the Masaka highway.

Kayanja didn't comment on Muhumuza's death or how the body was dumped, but said he had two guns and a pistol.

"He had a wholesale shop but he has been waylaying trucks and robbing merchandise to take to his shop," said Kayanja.

He said Muhumuza shared his loot with police officers from Masaka and Kabale.

"In fact we arrested him when he had gone to see some police officers to have him protected. We are going to arrest the officer he was colluding with," he said.

He said Muhumuza's accomplices had taken Shs 1m to Maj. Bisaso to buy his freedom.

Maj. Bisaso is co-ordinating the operation in Masaka and western Uganda.

"That is when Maj. Bisaso had them arrested. He told them that he could not be bribed," said Kayanja.
