The Government has released 5,000 vaccine vials to contain a severe outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Nyando District.

And following the outbreak the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has imposed a quarantine and restricted livestock movement into the area and within the district.

Nyando deputy District Veterinary Officer (DVO) Mr Wilson Kenga in a statement at the weekend, said the Government last week dispatched the first consignment of vaccines to assist in combating the epidemic.

Kenga said the initial batch of the vaccine started being administered on livestock last week in the Miwani sugar-belt where the disease was first detected

He said the vaccines are available to livestock owners at the cost of Sh10 per dose and that his department anticipates an 80 per cent coverage, during the vaccination campaign.

Following the outbreak the district's five markets - Ahero, Awasi, Sondu, Katito and Nyakwero - have been closed.

"Due to the outbreak, there were no animals during this year's Kisumu regional Agricultural Society of Kenya Show that took place from July 31 to August 4," he added.
