Uganda: Caller Says LRA Rebel's Otti Still Alive

20 August 2002

UPDF reports that the Lord's Resistance Army rebels' Brig. Vincent Otti is alive appear to be confirmed by a caller to The Monitor.

A caller who said he is Col. Sam Kolo, the LRA in-charge of politics, said yesterday that Brig. Otti is "alive and well".

Col. Kolo said Otti's injury is "[President Yoweri] Museveni's government propaganda to boost the morale of their soldiers."

"Otti is not with me right here but I will arrange for you to talk to him. He is alive and well. This government survives by deceiving people, you remember one time they told lies that our leader Joseph Kony was injured.

"I would like to inform [everyone] that the LRA is a peace-loving organisation. They are trying to deceive Ugandans and the international community that they are about to finish the war," Col. Kolo said.

The UPDF has cast doubt on recent press reports that Brig. Otti was killed in battle in Gulu.
