US President George W. Bush has hailed President Yoweri Museveni for his role in the peace process in the Sudan, reports Anne Mugisa.
Museveni has been trying to broker peace between the Khartoum government and the rebel Sudanese People's Liberation Movement/ Army (SPLM/A).
Recently, he hosted a meeting between arch-rivals Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir and SPLA chairman Col. John Garang in Kampala.
Bush's appreciation was delivered to Museveni by the US special envoy on the Sudan, Senator John Danforth, in Gulu on Tuesday, a statement from State House said.
The envoy was accompanied by the American Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Charles Schnider, the Director for African Affairs in the UN Security Council, Michael Miller, and the US Charge d'Affaires in Uganda, Ms Vicky Moore.
Museveni and Danforth discussed the peace process in the Sudan in reference to the Machakos agreement made by the Khartoum government and the SPLA, the statement said. Danforth said Bush was keenly following the peace process.
He said all the parties to the peace process were positive about reaching a final agreement.
In another development, Museveni also received a special envoy from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mwanke Katumba, in Gulu.
They discussed the recently signed peace agreement between Uganda and the DRC.
