Uganda: Defence Minister Links NGOs to Kony

DEFENCE minister Amama Mbabazi told Parliament on Friday that some politicians and non-governmental organisations were backing Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army.

Mbabazi, who was presenting a ministerial statement on the security situation in the country, said Kony's capacity continues to diminish by the hour.

He said Kony was denied public mass support in the northern districts of Gulu, Kitgum and Pader.

"The LRA has been denied capacity to attack UPDF defence. That is why it has resorted to wreacking havoc on civilian targets, especially the internally displaced people's camps. This will also fail since the UPDF has deployed and continues to deploy to protect the camps," he said.

Mbabazi said due to intense pressure by the UPDF, Kony had again sneaked back to southern Sudan and is currently in Upper Talanga, trying to establish his new headquarters at Katire.

The defence chief informed MPs that the 4th addendum to the protocol between Sudan and Uganda was signed on August 14 and had been extended to September 14.

He said Uganda would continue to operate in Southern Sudan and to coordinate its military operations against the LRA remnants in Kit valley with the Sudan People's Armed Forces.

"We have been rather cautious in the use of our helicopter gunships because Kony was known to posses anti aircraft missiles. Having captured them except one, we have started using gunships," Mbabazi said.
