Uganda: Save the Children Assists Gulu District

ITEMS worth sh60m were recently donated by Save the Children - Denmark to thousands of children who are displaced by Joseph Kony's rebel group within Gulu Municipality, reports Dennis Ojwee.

The items were handed over during a function held at Gulu district LC5 council hall yard in Gulu municipality. The Gulu district disaster preparedness chairman, Charles Uma, officiated at the function.

The items included 42,000 cartons of exercise books, 740 packets of pens and pencils, 12 cartons of chalk, 100 chalkboards, 17 dozen dusters, 6,000 blankets, 500 dozen plastic plates, 500 dozen plastic cups, 20 cooking (fabricate) and cooking stoves and 240 cartons of Mukwano soap.

Uma said about 70% of the 45,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) were children.

He said it was the first direct assistance to IDP children.

Programme coordinator Save the Children - Denmark Mark Avola said the items would be distributed to 10 centres in the municipality, where the children take refugee daily. Ends
