HaroLd Smith, the vice-president of Christi-anity Today International, a US publication, has challenged journalists to always have an uncompromising commitment to excellence and truth, writes Charity Kalebbo.
Smith was presenting a paper on the "Impact on Society and the Challenges of Christians in the Media Industry" at a seminar organised by Relate publications at Kampala Evangelical school of theology on Saturday.
He said journalists should guard against the tendency of wanting to see their by-line at the expense of serving society. He said if the media is to succeed, they need to know their readers.
"Armed with a better knowledge of what our readers are struggling with does not only improve our writing and editing but also the way we package our newspapers," he said.
Good reporting will attract the attention of those who seem to be losing confidence in a publication. He said journalists need to expose lies in culture if they are to shape their society.
The New Vision's deputy editor-in-chief, David Sseppuuya, and World Vision's country director Robby Muhumuza, were among the journalists who attended the seminar. Ends
