Africa: Greenpeace Activists Plead Guilty

30 August 2002

Cape Town — Twelve Greenpeace activists were found guilty in the Atlantis Magistrate's Court on Friday of trespassing and breaching the National Key Points Act.

Last Saturday, six of the 12 activists from several countries scaled the five-storey seawater cooling pumphouse at the Koeberg nuclear power station to unfurl a banner proclaiming "Nukes out of Africa."

They were arrested shortly afterwards and appeared in the Atlantis court on Monday where the matter was postponed to Friday.

Greenpeace spokesman Mike Townsley said the activists pleaded on Friday guilty to the charge.

The acting director for public prosecutions Rodney de Kock said the magistrate postponed the case to Monday when they will be sentenced.

De Kock said contravention of the National Key Points Act made provision for a fine of up to R10000 and imprisonment which could be suspended.[WSSD]
