Uganda: Tortured Student Referred to Mulago

Kampala — A senior six student in Kabale who was recently tortured by a soldier from the UPDF 21 Battalion has been referred to Mulago Hospital after his condition worsened.

The student, Roland Ainebyoona, is a son to a Kabale businessman Ben Kiruhura.

Kiruhura told a press conference in Kabale town on Tuesday that his son Ayinebyona,19, was treated at Kigonzi clinic in Kabale town but was later transferred to Kisizi Hospital in Rukungiri district when the situation deteriorated.

"Am just looking for an ambulance to take my son to Mulago Hospital for more operations. He is badly off and if I don't take him anything can happen," he said.

Ayinebyona was allegedly tortured by Lt. Julius Mwali, an intelligence officer with the UPDF 21 Battalion in Kabale town. The two had quarrelled at a dance in Earth Quarke Disco Hall. See Tortured Student Rots (The Monitor Aug.31).

Kiruhura denied that he and Mwali had atempted to settle the mater out of court.

"I can not discuss any thing with any body concerning my son who is in

critical condition. What I want is this man to be taken to court and

tried accordingly," he said.

The 21 Battalion commanding officer Maj. Katongole told The Monitor early this week that Mwali had been arrested for the alleged torture.

The Monitor has established that Mwali has not been taken to court.
