Africa: Johannesburg Paves the Way

Johannesburg — IN THE negativity that often characterises South Africa's national discourse, there was much anticipation of chaos ahead of the World Summit on Sustainable Development[WSSD].

Airports would not be able to handle the tide of delegates. There would be traffic snarl-ups all over Johannesburg as heads of state were whisked from meetings to banquets. And oh, of course, our legion of criminals would rob and rape delegates while our police officers would not be able to cope.
