Johannesburg — The Democratic Alliance said on Sunday the deaths of 166
children from starvation in the Eastern Cape in the first half of
2002 clearly indicated the necessity for a basic income grant.
"There is a huge social security gap between the maximum age at
which one could claim a child support grant and the minimum age at
which one qualifies for an old-age pension. And it is this gap that
could be closed by the implementation of a basic income grant (BIG)
of R110 per month," the DA's Nick Clelland-Stokes said in a
statement.
