Kenya: Gitari: 'Nation' Scribe Charged

Nairobi — A journalist with the Daily Nation yesterday appeared before Nairobi Chief Magistrate, Boaz Olao, charged with publishing a false statement.

Francis Muriithi Muriuki is alleged to have published the statement on September 16, in Nairobi with others not before court.

He allegedly published the false statement saying retired Anglican Church Archbishop, David Mukuba Gitari, said President Moi's preferred successor, Uhuru Kenyatta, might not live to see the presidency.

The statement is alleged to have been picked during a church sermon at the All Saints Cathedral where Gitari was giving his last sermon before he retired.

He was freed on Sh100,000 bond or Sh50,000 cash bail.
