Ghana: Trouble in Assemblies of God Church

Three pastors of the Tema Community Five Revival Assemblies of God Church and their families have been suspended from the congregation indefinitely.

The Greater Accra regional headquarters of the Assemblies of God Church has for the meantime taken over the management of the church till sanity returns.

The Chronicle reporter, who attended service on Sunday, has it that there were mixed feelings among members of the congregation as they filed out of the chapel after the decision taken by the Greater Accra regional headquarters.

A six-man delegation headed by the regional Superintendent Pastor George Annan arrived and conducted the sermon.

Unlike the previous week when the service was disrupted, last Sunday's was exceptionally motivating as George Annan dwelt on "waiting unto the Lord.

When the message seemed to have soaked the flock, the Superintendent landed the bombshell of suspension for the three, pastors Gilbert Semenyo (Head), Sarpong Mensah-Bonsu (Associate Pastor) and Paul Ampofo Williams, an invited pastor who was brought in by the head to replace Mensah-Bonsu, who had earlier been suspended.

A section of the congregation greeted the suspension with happiness. Members wanted to know why the three men of God, who during their suspension would still be paid, cannot be transferred to remote areas where the word of God has not been heard before.

The answer was that the Constitution of the Assemblies of God does not allow rampant transfers unless necessary.

This called for an amendment to their constitution. There was dead silence in the church as a question posed about what happens to the pastors who will be running the affairs of the church in terms of salaries came as a shocker.

The reply was that even though they will not demand anything, whatever the congregation gives will be accepted.

It will be recalled that on Sunday September15, members of the congregation revolted against the head pastor, Gilbert Semenyo, for attempting to preach when asked to stop.

The congregation was in solidarity with the associate pastor, Sarpong Mensah-Bonsu, who the head had earlier suspended.

Police from Tema Community Two had to step in for peace to prevail.

None of the suspended pastors and their families were in church yesterday and attempts for their reaction proved futile.
