Kampala — IF you are a potential saboteur of national immunisation programmes, think twice.
Seven men were over the weekend tied up with ropes while being arrested in Bushenyi for undermining the immunisation exercise.
Bushenyi Resident District Commissioner Bamusedde Bwambale on Saturday did not tell the state minister for disabilities, Florence Nayiga, when those arrested would appear in court.
Nayiga, who was accompanied by the district governor of Rotary International, Dr. Varinder Singh, gave an emotional address on polio eradication campaign.
"I am a polio victim. There is no cure for polio, but it can be prevented. So let us give all children the chance to grow and be healthy," Nayiga said.
The Ministry of Health is fighting to eradicate polio in conjunction with WHO and UNICEF.
The October 5 and 6 exercise was the second round of the sub-national immunisation programme for children below five years.
Bushenyi had the lowest immunisation coverage of 48% in the country last year.
It is among the 18 districts bordering countries with a high risk of polio virus transmission.
District officials said they would achieve 100% coverage this time round.
Other districts involved in the sub national immunisation programme in western Uganda include Bundibugyo, Hoima, Kabarole, Kasese, Kibaale, Kisoro, Masindi, Kanungu and Rukungiri.
In the north the programme covers Moyo, Nebbi, Yumbe, Kotido and Adjumani.
Others are Arua, Gulu and Kitgum.
