Uganda: Ex-CIA Boss Seeks Uganda Support to Fight Saddam

Kampala — Former CIA Director in the United States James Woolsey has called upon Uganda to give moral support to President George Bush's efforts to overthrow Iraq's President Saddam Hussein.

Woolsey who was recently addressing 24 journalist from 23 different Countries including Uganda on the theme; "The roll of Intelligence agencies", said Saddam is a mad man who need not only to disarm but also to overthrow.

The journalists were participants in a three weeks International Visitor project for Investigative Journalist sponsored by US government of State which ended Sept 29 in Philadephia city.

"Saddam should be overthrown now and we need moral support of not only Uganda but all African Countries. The more days we give this beast who have killed thousands of his people, the more destructive weapons he continues to manufacture and he intends to use them on soft targets in Africa and elsewhere," Woolsey said.

He said that some of Saddam's close relatives have confirmed to US Intelligence that actually Saddam is busy manufacturing chemical, and other dangerous weapons in preparation for war.

Woolsey who served in the Bill Clinton regime was however doubtful of the UN re-inspection proposal in Iraq saying that this exercise which failed in the 1990s can not materialise now.

He said Saddam who has violated several UN proposals always insists that for any Iraq citizen to testify before the Inspection team, he or she must do so in the presence of Iraq Intelligence and he said this is dangerous to the informer's lives together with their families.

However, Woolsey who served as ambassador to the Negotiation on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE), Viona, between 1989 and 1991, said an internal overthrow against Saddam is not easy.

" A number of Iraq nationals especially the Kurds we incited to overthrow Saddam in the 90s ended up being killed. Saddam is hard to find because he has 51 difrent Palaces and each Palace prepares three meals for him everyday," he said.

When asked what will happen when UN refuses to approve the overthrow of Saddam, Woolsey said with or without UN's approval on this, US will atack Iraq the way they did Kosovo's former president Molesovic and allow national to elect they next leader democratically.

Though local US leaders are still devided on the isue of attacking Iraq to the extent that some demostrated against this pending war on September 11 commemeration day, Woolsey said that he was optmistic that by the end of this month (October), Bush will be able to get three-thirds of the Congress approaval.
