Uganda: Government Gets UN Panel Report

Kampala — THE Government is studying the damning United Nations' panel report released on Monday that accuses some UPDF top brass of looting the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"Our position at the moment is that we are carefully studying the panel's report. But we are waiting for the report of the judicial commission of inquiry led by Justice David Porter according to the recommendations of the first UN panel report last year. We are acting in step with UN recommendations," third deputy premier and foreign affairs minister James Wapakhabulo said last night.

"After we have compared both reports, we assure our people and the international community that we shall implement the findings," he said.

Porter is expected to hand over his findings by November 15.

Meanwhile, the military intelligence chief Col. Noble Mayombo, on Monday denied having benefited from the plunder of natural resources from the DRC where Kampala sent troops to back a rebellion. He challenged the authors of a UN-commissioned report that implicated him to reveal the source of their information.
