Uganda: UPDF Warns Priests

Kampala — THE Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) has warned religious leaders in Acholi against coming into direct contact with the Lord's Resistance Army rebels in their efforts to convince them (rebels) to talk peace with the Government.

The UPDF 4th Division spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, told The New Vision that, "They (rebels) still have got plans to kill the religious leaders. They have killed a pastor, Rev. Wilfred Kilama and they nearly ambushed Bishop Nelson Onono Onweng of northern Uganda diocese."

He said the LRA rebels are wicked and the religious leaders in Acholi must keep away from them.

President Yoweri Museveni recently wrote to Archbishop John B. Odama warning him against talking directly to the LRA rebel commanders since they have plans to kill the Archbishop and other Acholi cultural leaders, who want to encourage peace talks between the Government and the LRA rebels.
