Zimbabwe: Gays to Vie for Jacaranda Queen Title At Drag Show

This year's Jacaranda Queen, a gay drag pageant, will be held on 9 November at Harry Margolis Hall, Milton Park, Harare.

Fifteen men are taking part in the contest. The winner will take over from "Vanessa", who was the Jacaranda Queen last year.

Handsome Tony and Esmeralda were the first and second princesses, respectively last year.

Dumisani Dube, the Jacaranda Queen functions manager, promised a bigger and better show this year. He said the audience would be treated to entertainment from various groups.

Dube said: "The event, which in previous years has been low-key, has, since two years ago, developed once again into a vibrant and entertaining show." He said although the show had received a negative response from the public in the past, society was slowly accepting the reality of homosexuality. Dube said last year's winners had done a lot of charity work, organising HIV/Aids awareness campaigns and promoting safe sex in the gay community. The Jacaranda Queen pageant has been celebrated since the 70s under different names, but with the same aim of celebrating "gay beauty".
