Kampala — 70 Captives are Set Free
The UPDF has maintained the heat on the LRA rebels in Gulu and Pader districts. In a two-day pursuit, the army has rescued 70 captives, killed three rebels and arrested eight collaborators.
Five rebels surrendered to the UPDF Pabbo detachment on Wednesday.
In another development, the army recovered a rocket-propelled gun from the rebels after an abortive attack on a Sobetra Construction Company pick-up truck on the Gulu-Pabbo road on Wednesday. A man was killed and a woman injured critically in the attack.
The collaborators were arrested in Pajule sub-county, Aruu county in Pader after a tip-off from local leaders.
The 4th Division spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, yesterday said the UPDF freed 38 people from captivity at Achol-pii in Kilak after a deadly encounter with the rebels.
Ankunda said, "We engaged them and rescued the captives in separate encounters."
He said three rebels were killed in a battle in Lacor and 11 captives freed yesterday. The fight took place in Pucota and Boro-Boro Kal Pungole parishes near Aruu hills on the Agago and Aswa river banks. Two soldiers were injured in the confrontation, Ankunda said.
He said five of the captives were rescued in Palukere, 40 miles on the Gulu-Juba Road in Atiak, Gulu.
Meanwhile, the army said it shot dead a suspected gunman commonly known as Boo Kec at Obiya a suburb of Gulu Municipality yesterday night.
Security sources at Obiya said Boo Kec's gang was on a looting spree when the army took them on.
